High-level noise is one of the most pervasive and serious health hazards in industry and the military. An understanding and control of the health hazards requires a coordinated scientific approach involving a wide spectrum of disciplines. This book is a collection of current critical issues on the biological basis of noise-induced hearing loss and engineering advances to control noise.
Recently, research has revealed how individuals can be made more resistant to the effects of noise; that inner ear damage, in certain species can be repaired; that damage to the inner ear can actually induce changes in the auditory division of the central nervous system; and that the effects of noise can be exacerbated with certain drugs. On a more applied level, engineers are developing hearing protection devices that are electronically "triggered" when noise approaches damaging levels.
