Tumors and other space occupying lesions in the brain displace rather than occupy cerebral tissue. Because of this, unexpected neurologic deficit after a stereotactic or radiosurgical procedure can often be explained in retrospect by the proximity of the intended target to a neural structure or pathway that had not been apparent on imaging studies conducted beforehand. To help correct this problem the authors have compiled a stereotactic atlas of actual case material that shows intrusions, displacements, and other effects upon normal anatomy caused by representative examples of lesions encountered during the practice of stereotactic surgery and radiosurgery. After a brief introduction explaining methods of correlation with traditional stereotactic atlases, the three major sections of the book cover extra-axial and skull base tumors, intra-axial tumors, and arteriovenous malformations. Book Description
This atlas is an essential reference for neurosurgeons and radiation therapists performing stereotactic surgery or radiosurgery on lesions of the brain. Compiled by a neurosurgeon and a radiologist, the atlas presents computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images drawn from actual cases and correlates these images with traditional stereotactic brain atlases. This graphic material enables the surgeon to clearly visualize the effects of various space-occupying lesions on normal anatomy and to see the surgical target in relation to surrounding neural structures and pathways.An introductory chapter explains the methods used to correlate stereotactic and diagnostic imaging with traditional stereotactic atlases. Subsequent chapters present case material on extra-axial and skull base tumors, intra-axial tumors, and arteriovenous malformations.
Synopsis
This reference is designed to synthesize magnetic resonance stereotactic data, stereotactic angiographic data, and anatomic brain atlas data, yielding a catalogue of common and uncommon lesions with precise anatomical and functional correlations. It reviews the advances in imaging technology, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There are radioimages from anatomic and functional stereotactic procedures, including radiosurgery, with the aim of helping the reader to diagnose and treat lesions such as skull-base meningiomas, cerebellopontine angle tumours, and brainstem vascular malformations, with increased accuracy.
