Not only is dental caries an issue in treating pediatric patients during growth, but orthodontic issues may also arise.
Even if one does not directly perform orthodontic treatment, orthodontic knowledge is essential in the overall dental care of pediatric and adolescent patients.
During my pediatric dentistry training, one major frustration was the lack of well-organized didactics on orthodontic therapy for children and adolescents.
This frustration led to further education in orthodontics.
However, during orthodontic training, it became evident that orthodontic issues related to children and adolescents made up only a part of training,
and that it was not meant to be taught fully and comprehensively.
In retrospect, orthodontic training provided a foundation to develop clinical skills, but true expertise in theory and clinical techniques developed through post-training experiences.
Following orthodontic training, I exclusively provided orthodontic treatment for children and adolescents, and experienced many successes and failures.
This led to the establishment of orthodontic principles and treatment methods to treat this population.
When writing this textbook, there was the initial consideration of collaborating with others who engage in orthodontics for children.
However, as there was a need to focus solely on establishing or thodontic treatment concepts for pediatric patients undergoing growth as opposed to simply presenting diverse treatment methods,
it seemed more appropriate to present a consistent set of my experiences and opinions across various aspects of orthodontic malocclusion during growth.
To the dentists who refer to this book, I encourage you to first grasp the big picture of pediatric and adolescent orthodontic issues as illustrated by the theories and concepts. Furthermore,
being consistent in knowledge and treatment application, and then referring to various opinions, will greatly assist you when handling orthodontic issues in the pediatric population.
